Tolerance is the capacity to endure pain or hardship a way to control your self. It is important today because it became the part of life which helps people determine themselves weather it was right or wrong. And also accepting people for who they are.
Possibly the best thing Harper Lee decided with the book was to use an unreliable, innocent, and young child to be the reader’s eyes. Scout Finch starts as a typical six year old girl, but as time goes on, she quickly matures and makes lifelong realizations like most children do. Scout is an adventurous and smart young girl that is inquisitive and always eager to learn. Scout is polite and had been raised to be naturally tolerant by her father Attics. Her innocence is a gift that unknowingly saves a few lives throughout the book.
Another example of tolerance is Tom Robinson .Attics helps him in the trial because he has accepted him and everybody calls him the ”nigger lover” Tom Robinson was killed because he felt sorry for the girl. There was one tolerance they were against African American people.
Mrs. Dubose she’s the girl who screams a lot to all the people around her. Jem and scout always make fun of her because of her attitude that she show to them. The author establishes the theme of tolerance on Mrs. Dubose because she is a girl who doesn’t accepts any word, opinion, or credit to other people. The author uses her because tolerance means nothing to her.
Atticus is the most tolerant person in the book! I think he is the most tolerant because he was a lawyer and he had to deal with some very rude people. He treated everybody with the same amount of respect it didn’t matter who they were. He was also tolerant towards Bob Ewell. He was tolerant towards him because every time Bob Ewell would treat him with no respect. He would call Atticus bad names, spit on him and tell him he was going to lose the Robinson case. But Atticus would still treat him civil. He would just walk away from the situation.
This novel and characters are somewhat timeless. What happened in Maycomb could still happen everyday. Tolerance still desperately needs to be promoted. Although we try to say that racism and prejudice is over, we must face realty and know that there are still bad people in the world. But is more people focused on character rather than skin color, tolerance would be an innate word in everyone’s vocabulary.
